Nas and MF DOOM once shared a legendary freestyle session that etched its mark in hip-hop history, an hour-long lyrical exchange that, unfortunately, remains unrecorded.
This unforgettable cypher was vividly recounted by DOOM’s former assistant, Courtney Brown, in a heartfelt editorial for The Source. The piece commemorates the third anniversary of the iconic rapper’s passing.
Brown, who collaborated closely with MF DOOM for years, first crossed paths with him through Talib Kweli. She reminisced about many cherished moments, with one standout being DOOM’s musical connection with Nas.
“I moved to L.A. to assist him as he worked on DangerDOOM,” she shared. “During that time we spent a lot of time finding inspiration for that album and hanging out with my best friend at the time Kelis and her husband, rapper Nas.
“One day after a bougie L.A. dinner I convinced them to come back to my hotel room where DOOM put on some beats and Nas began freestyling. This lasted nearly an hour. DOOM had his Special Herbs CD on him and it was a historical moment not captured on camera or recorded.”
Although an official collaborative release never materialized, the mutual respect and creative spark between these two rap giants forged a unique bond. This connection endured until DOOM’s untimely passing in 2020. This account offers a glimpse into a dynamic encounter between two of hip-hop’s finest, showcasing the depth and legacy of their artistic synergy.
