A recent Instagram post from legendary Juice Crew rapper MC Shan has stirred up controversy within the hip-hop community. The outspoken artist vented his frustrations over Nas allegedly neglecting to include him in any of the Hip Hop 50 celebrations Nas has been organizing throughout the first half of 2023.
In the now-viral video, MC Shan makes his feelings clear, addressing Nas directly, saying, “I’m sitting here hearing that Nas is doing these muthafuckin’ 50th anniversary shows, right?” MC Shan began. “Nas, if you doing 50th anniversary shows and you ain’t holla at ya mans, let me tell you something, my n-gga, don’t never mention my muthafuckin’ name again. Don’t put my name in ya mouth about nothing, n-gga.”
The artist goes on to emphasize his principles, asserting that he doesn’t seek validation from the wealthy and that his worth lies in loyalty and respect. He expresses his disappointment in Nas for not acknowledging his contributions during the Hip Hop 50 events.
He continued: “See, I’m not one of them n-ggas that’s fucking glorified by n-ggas with money. I could give a fuck how much money a n-gga got. N-gga, you put your pants on one leg at a time like men n-gga. I ain’t glorified by the shit you have.
“But I’m looking at it like this, n-gga: if you gettin’ n-ggas money on the 50th of Hip Hop, and you glorify me and say, ‘Yo, Shan this,’ and you ain’t call me and say, ‘Yo, Shan, I see what you doing, n-gga.’ “I done did a show with you muthafucka, but if you ain’t call me and that whole roster is full, n-gga, don’t never mention my mothafuckin’ name.”
While the specific shows MC Shan refers to remain unclear, Nas’ collaboration with Wu-Tang Clan and his headline appearance at Madison Square Garden in February raise questions about the extent of the celebrations.
Despite MC Shan’s vocal criticism, Nas has previously shown appreciation for the veteran rapper. During a February appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Nas paid homage to MC Shan’s classic 1985 song “The Bridge,” declaring it one of his all-time favorite rap songs.
As Hip Hop 50 celebrations continue, the issue has ignited discussions among fans and peers alike, raising questions about recognition and inclusivity within the hip-hop community. Only time will tell if Nas addresses the matter directly or if MC Shan’s grievances will be resolved amicably.
