Nas’ seminal album “Illmatic” continues to receive recognition and praise, this time from the New York State Senate as it approaches its 30th anniversary. On March 27, the State Senate session opened with a tribute to Nas and his groundbreaking debut.
Senator Jamaal T. Bailey presented a resolution to honor the album’s milestone, emphasizing the significance of Nas’ achievement at the young age of 20. He praised Nas for creating what many consider to be the greatest hip-hop album of all time, noting that “Illmatic” served as the soundtrack to his own youth.
Bailey highlighted Nas’ role as a storyteller and cultural commentator, referring to him as a “Hip Hop griot” who has provided insightful commentary on life in the streets. He asserted that any list of the top five greatest rappers would be incomplete without Nas.
Nas himself was present at the session, introduced by Senator James Sanders Jr., who hailed him as Queens’ own “eighth wonder.” The rapper graciously accepted the accolades, acknowledging the praise from the senators.
In addition to the recognition from politicians, Nas has been reflecting on his journey in his latest music video for “I Love This Feeling.” The video features Nas cruising through Los Angeles in a vintage Mercedes-Benz, reminiscing about his past with archival footage, and sharing wisdom with a classroom of children.
As Nas prepares to celebrate the 30th anniversary of “Illmatic,” the album’s enduring impact on hip-hop culture and its continued recognition by institutions like the New York State Senate underscore its status as a timeless masterpiece.
