In recent years, a growing number of artists from the rap community have begun to question the long-accepted notion that Eminem, or Marshall Bruce Mathers, reigns supreme in the music genre. In a surprising turn of events, California-based rapper Symba has joined the ranks of these contrarians, challenging Eminem’s position and boldly asserting his claim to possessing greater lyrical prowess.
These thought-provoking comments unfolded during a panel discussion titled “The Great Debate,” which occurred at the REVOLT WORLD event in Atlanta, Georgia, over the previous weekend. Symba’s assertions stirred quite the conversation when he refused to place himself below the globally revered “Lose Yourself” artist and hinted that Eminem’s lyrics might often prioritize style over substance.
Setting the tone for a spirited debate, Symba started, “I respect Eminem on a level as a man.” However, he added a controversial twist when he noted, “But as a rapper, I feel like I can name five better rappers.” In the face of these sweeping statements, fellow panelist and artist Tierra Whack put the question to him directly when she asked, “Wait, so you think you’re better than Eminem?”
Without missing a beat, Symba asserted, “Yes,” adding a thought-provoking point of view into the mix, “Anybody can rhyme words, [but] what are you saying?” His bold statements suggest that Marshall Mathers, even with his chart-topping hits and decades of influence in the rap industry, may not hold the lyrical depth he is oftentimes credited with.
Despite a career punctuated by significant accolades and a colossal fan base, Eminem has not been immune to critique. This is especially prevalent in the past few years as he has transformed from a controversial artist pushing boundaries to an acclaimed veteran in the industry.
Interestingly, Symba isn’t the first artist to express such views. Over the past year, various figures in the music landscape have voted their opinions on Eminem’s talent. Notably, The Game made headlines during his appearance on the Drink Champs interview, where, under the influence of alcohol, he declared himself a “better rapper” than Eminem. He even took it a step further by challenging him to a Verzuz battle.
Remaining unflinching in his stand, The Game took to Instagram to reiterate his thoughts, saying, “When y’all say Eminem is better and all that, I see it, I see it. I feel you. If you feel like Eminem is better than me, that’s your opinion.” The Compton-based rapper continued, “But it’s a lot of people that feel like I’m better than Eminem, and that’s their opinion. Me personally?”
Following this significant clash of opinions, The Game added fuel to the fire by releasing “Drillmatic – The Heart vs. The Mind” in November 2022. In the album, a 10-minute diss track titled “The Black Slim Shady” is featured, seemingly aimed at Eminem.
