ScHoolboy Q has shed light on the meticulous journey that went into crafting his acclaimed sixth album, Blue Lips, disclosing that it occupied a significant portion of his time since his last release.
In an exclusive interview with BACKONFIGG aired on Saturday (March 2), the TDE luminary offered valuable insights into the album’s genesis.
“I knew where I was going with it in 2019. Most of these songs were recorded early, lyrics wise. I always tell people, I’m more of a producer than I am a rapper.” ScHoolboy shared, underscoring his multifaceted approach to music-making.
While he possesses the innate ability to effortlessly deliver rhymes over a beat, the process of refining Blue Lips into its final form proved to be a lengthy endeavor. Despite having a well-defined concept from the outset, actualizing it posed its own set of challenges.
“I explained everything…and we took literally almost five years,” ScHoolboy chuckled. “That’s just how I work.”
The maestro behind hits like “Collard Greens” further elucidated that his creative output extends far beyond what listeners hear on his albums. “I’ve got more tracks than Pac, no doubt. To be honest, I often repurpose lyrics. While I’ve amassed a vast collection of songs, I frequently borrow words from other compositions,” he confessed, offering a glimpse into his prolific songwriting process.
As ScHoolboy Q interacted with fans surrounding the album’s release, he candidly addressed inquiries about his musical journey, offering candid insights on platforms like X (formerly Twitter). When asked about the most challenging song to create, he promptly singled out “BLUESLIDES.”
This particular track serves as a poignant tribute to the late Mac Miller, a dear friend and collaborator who released Blue Slide Park in 2011.
ScHoolboy Q’s meticulous approach to crafting Blue Lips underscores his unwavering commitment to delivering unparalleled artistry to his audience. With each track carefully honed over the span of five years, the album stands as a testament to his dedication to his craft and his enduring legacy in the hip-hop landscape.
