Dame Dash, the hip-hop mogul and co-founder of Roc-A-Fella Records, recently shared his disappointment regarding J Cole’s decision to apologize to Kendrick Lamar for his “7 Minute Drill” diss track. Speaking on the America Nu Network, Dame Dash discussed his views on the brief feud between the two rap heavyweights.
Expressing his disappointment as a fan, Dash stated that while he means no disrespect to J Cole, it seemed like Cole surrendered by offering an apology to Lamar. He acknowledged the strategic move from a business perspective, noting that Cole’s album release following the diss track garnered attention and success.
“As a fan, I’m disappointed,” he said. “[…] No disrespect to J. Cole but as a fan, it seemed like he threw up the white flag. I think he was smart on a business level to capitalize and put an album out with the retaliation [‘7 Minute Drill’] and that sh*t did well from [what] I saw. So for business, it was smart to put it out.”
Dame Dash Shares Thoughts on J Cole and Kendrick Lamar Feud:
Dash elaborated on his perspective, highlighting that he personally wouldn’t have invested seven minutes in a response track. He emphasized that Lamar’s initial diss track was formidable, and Cole’s retaliation didn’t match the intensity. Dash critiqued the content of Cole’s track, suggesting it lacked the rawness typically associated with rap battles.
Regarding Cole’s apology, Dash interpreted it as a concession to Lamar’s superiority in the feud. He questioned the notion of taking the “high road,” arguing that the exchange between the two artists didn’t escalate to a level warranting an apology. Dash emphasized that true rap beef involves more aggressive and personal attacks, which were absent in this instance.
While Cole opted to step back from the feud, Drake entered the fray with his own diss track titled “Push Ups.” Fans are eagerly awaiting Lamar’s response to Drake’s diss. Currently, Rick Ross is the sole artist named by Drake to retaliate with a diss track of his own.
Dash’s commentary provides insight into the dynamics of rap feuds and the expectations surrounding them within the hip-hop community. As the saga between Cole, Lamar, and Drake continues to unfold, fans remain engaged, anticipating further developments and responses from the involved parties.
Through Dash’s perspective, it becomes evident that rap beefs are not only about lyrical prowess but also about the strategic maneuvers and cultural significance within the genre.
